UK Spring 2025 - Isle of Skye - WIP

This is a very popular tourist destination in Scotland. How should we describe it... It is a wild and rugged version of Lake District. Roads get narrower and and more winding after passing Skye bridge. The views are amazing, the terrain makes you feel how small you really are.

Driving is probably the best way to get around this place. But we don't recommend driving all the way from Edinburgh/Glasgow to Portree (the capital and largest town in Isle of Skye) in one go. There are a lot to see between the Scottish cities and the town, especially Glencoe.

We started from Glasgow in the morning, went for short walks around Balloch Castle & Country Park and Luss for some great photos of Loch Lomond, then had lunch at Callander. There are a lot of view points between here and Fort William, take your time and absorb in all the scenery! Spent a night in Premier Inn Fort William. The hotel is quite dated, not the cleanest we have stayed in and have no air conditioning, hence the under 4 star rating in Google. Temperature wise is OK during early May... but the beds are out of this world! It is so out of place because they are absolutely comfortable!

The next day after hearty (and standard) buffet breakfast in the hotel, we went to see the Jacobite train which is just 6 mins walk or 2 mins drive away from Premier Inn Fort William. It departs the Fort William station to Mallaig around 10:15 and will pass by the Glenfinnan Viaduct twice a day around 10:45 and 15:15. Bear in mind that Glenfinnan Viaduct is 30 mins drive away from Fort William station and can be very crowded during the train passing times. Parking is also limited around that area, so try and reach there early.

We reached there around 10:20, the main parking area was already full, some spots were already blocked/closed hence it took us 20 mins to drive further down the road and parked in a hotel parking which we needed to pay. We walked at least 10 mins to the viaduct and by that time it was already 10:50, we thought we missed it but there was still a fair bit of crowd. Suddenly people started shouting, "Train!" and you can hear the whistle of the steam train! Man, we were really lucky!

After this we drove to Fort Augustus for lunch. After so many days of western food, we were craving for Chinese cuisine, options are limited. We took a rather risky choice of a restaurant with a 3.3 star rating, turned out to be surprisingly tasty! :)

UK Spring 2025 - Trips from London - WIP

There are many options traveling out of London, be it day trips or up to Scotland. We did 2 day trips out of London:

  • Cambridge - Great Northern Rail from King's Cross to Cambridge under 50 mins for express - remember to include Plus bus when you purchase your train tickets as you can hope on/off any buses in Cambridge except for those Tour buses. You need to redeem your physical tickets from King's Cross
  • WB Harry Potter Studio - West Midlands Railway from London Euston to Watford Junction around 15-20 mins. Your WB ticket includes a bus from Watford Junction station to the Studio!

And some below which we hopefully will get to in future:

There are 2 routes going to Scotland, via East coast or West coast, both serviced by different train operators. Both roughly takes 4 hours and 40 mins depending on whether you are heading for Glasgow or Edinburgh:

  • West coast to Glasgow - Avanti West Coast - departs/arrives at London Euston
  • East coast to Edinbrugh - LNER - departs/arrives King's Cross
There are Pros and cons for company. We think that the LNER trains are newer and cleaner with better air-conditioning. Avanti West offers Standard premium with quieter and slightly more spacious cabins. If you are going to Lake District, Avanti West is the only option. A detailed write up on Lake District is covered in another post

Luggage space is ample on both trains, we have quite large luggage measuring W55 x H81 x D35 cm. No issues on either services, tip is to try and get onboard early.

Between Glasgow (Queen Street Station) and Edinburgh (Waverley Station), ScotRail runs over 180 trains daily with express trains only taking 45-52 mins each way. You don't have to book that much in advance, a day before is perfectly OK. For the 2 trips we did from Glasgow to Edinburgh, we bought the Off-peak day return. Note that Off-peak tickets allow you to travel any time after 9:15am to 4:30pm and 6:30pm onward on weekdays and any time on weekends and bank holidays.

UK Spring 2025 - Lake District via public transport - WIP

There is limited information on Lake District via public transport but we have done it! It's not extremely challenging and very much doable. There are limitations of course in terms of time flexibility but at least you don't have to worry about parking and taking wrong turns! But something to note and bear in mind is that the buses are very punctual on main stations/stops but a bit iffy on those smaller stops along the way, meaning they can leave early and you might need to wait an hour for the next bus. More on this below on Catbells.

Avanti West Coast runs trains from London Euston to towns in the Lakes. There are 2 stations where you can disembark, Oxenholme Lake District and Penrith (North Lakes).

  • if you pick Oxenholme, you have a choice of settling down in Kendal or Windermere OR
  • Like us, we picked Keswick as we disembarked at Penrith. Ambleside is also a good choice to stay as there are much more food options and a bigger town compared to Keswick.

Stagecoach is the sole bus company servicing Lake District. They release 2 timetables annually, the Summer one which is published end of March, covering periods from 31/3 to 2/11 and the Winter one which is published early November, cover the other 4 months with lesser services. Bear in mind that Google map some times is not as up to date with these timetables.

Below are links to the 2024/2025 winter and summer timetables. Google "Stagecoach Lakes by Bus:

  • https://tiscon-maps-stagecoachbus.s3.amazonaws.com/Timetables/Cumbria/Lakes%20Connection/Summer%2025/Lakes%20by%20Bus%20Summer%202025%20WEB.pdf

You can get the free hard copy of the schedule on the bus, they are like bibles for the bus drivers as well!

Bus tickets can be purchased on the bus or via their App. We use their app as it's more convenient. It provides Live bus routes and ticket purchasing as well. Please ensure that your mobile is charged sufficiently as the mobile ticket is animated and uses the gyroscope of your mobile for security/fraud avoidance reasons. The key word and colour changes daily and you cannot take a screenshot of your mobile ticket!

Which bus ticket to get depends on your usage, how long you plan to stay in the Lakes and how big your group is. Frankly, their online customer service is pretty hopeless in their products. We made multiple attempts to contact them but never received a straight answer for which ticket to purchase nor if our large luggage will be allowed onto the bus. When we did a search, we got this, which worries us even more:
https://www.stagecoachbus.com/help-and-contact/faqs/how-much-luggage-can-i-take-on-the-bus

We are a group of 2 adults and a 10 year old and staying for 4 nights, hence it made perfect sense to get the North West Gold 7 day Group Megarider.
https://www.stagecoachbus.com/regionaltickets/cumbria-and-north-lancashire/kendal-and-the-lakes/megarider?passengerClass=GROUP

As per the posting of this blog, Stagecoach is running a promotion which states pay no more than £3 per single bus trip, which still ends up more expensive considering the number of buses we take per day :)

The train from Euston to Penrith took around 3 hours, no drama. We booked Standard Premium class because:

  • they are not significantly more expensive
  • they are actually First class minus the meals
  • cabin is more spacious (2+1 seats per row vs the standard class which is 2+2 seats per row)
  • less crowd which also means more luggage space for us

And when you reach Penrith station, rest assure that the X4 and X5 buses to Keswick does allow you to board with luggage, ours are huge, measuring W55 x H81 x D35 cm. No issues on the bus as there is ample luggage space :)

There is a large Booths supermarket just behind Keswick bus stop, you can't miss it. Keswick is pretty central, one of the bigger towns in the Lakes hence you don't have to worry about buses. Premier Inn is just less than 10 mins away from Booths and along the way, if you prefer, there's a Co-op there as well, though not as well stocked as Booths. We haven't came across the usual London supermarkets like Morrisons, M&S, Waitrose, Sainsbury's or Lidl in the few towns we visited in Lake District, Booths is the main one here, there's a Tesco Express in Ambleside.

<picture>

There is also a coin laundromat in Keswick. We did some washing there as the weather was a bit wet the first 2 days we were there, plus we tried to travel light hence brought lesser clothing. They accept cards at the main counter in exchange to coins, basically a wash costs £7 and dryer costs £5, total time is around a hour for both:

<picture>

During our 5D/4N stay, we managed to cover couple of walks like Catbells, Buttermere, Rydal Cave, Castlerigg stone circle and Derwentwater and a couple of bigger towns like Keswick, Grasmere, Ambleside, Windermere and Bowness and World of Beatrix Potter! Yes, via a bus :)

Most of them were very convenient, you just need to take note of the bus timings and adjust your walks accordingly, remember to keep the hard-copy of the timetable booklet with you for a quick and easy reference.

We had no issues with any of the above except for Catbells. Catbells is serviced by bus 77/77A which also covers Buttermere. Catbells is not far from Keswick but the bus frequency is a bit odd, you get hourly frequency in the mornings but in the afternoon, the buses are at 2 hour intervals. Cattle Grid bus stop is on a single lane road, that Sunday when we were there, while walking down the hill, we saw a bus passed by in the opposite direction, no issues, not our bus. But the bus we were waiting for didn't arrive and we waited over 45 mins! We tried calling Stagecoach call centre but they are as hopeless as their online customer service. Finally decided to walk back to Keswick, which is over an hours walk. Not a bad thing though, we stumbled upon a pretty good restaurant along the way :)

More to come!

UK Spring 2025 - Costing and Planning - WIP

Below are some personal guidelines that we used for this trip based on our research on the internet:

1. We book hotels which accommodates families, i.e. 2 adults and a child (under 12) into a single room - averaging around £160/night. Most of our hotels are with the larger UK hotel chain, Premier Inn. They are not exactly budget in price but have fabulous locations! If you are a couple, you can go for their sister company which is Hub by Premier Inn, their rooms a slightly smaller hence slightly cheaper. We only got to know we cannot book them as we have a child, we are only limited to Premier Inn's family rooms which can accommodate 2 adults and 2 children.

2. Our daily food budget is £50/day/pax, i.e. £10 for breakfast and £20 for lunch and dinner respectively - this can include food, snacks, mineral water, fruits, etc - e.g. breakfast will cost around £7 for a sandwich + coffee (it's not cheap in the UK, averaging between £3 - £4) at Pret A Manger, around £9 if you go to bakeries like Gail's. On some mornings where we need to leave early, we settled with some bread / buns and fruits from Waitrose / M&S Simply food and made our own coffee in the hotel room. We find meals in London are slightly costlier but much more options compared to Glasgow / Portree / Ambleside / etc. Dinner (main meal only, excluding drinks) costs from £17 to £20+ depending on cuisine. Be aware that there are water options, most times the waiter/waitress will ask if you want still / sparkling, ask for tap if you want free water. We only got to know about this after getting the bill in our first restaurant with a charge of £5.50 for a bottle of still water. The most reasonable bottled still water is from Tesco Express at £3.90 for 12 x 500ml from Highland Spring.

3. Transportation depends on where you go. In London, buses are capped at £5.25/day, i.e. you will not get charged after your 3rd tap. Similarly for Tubes, these are capped at £8.90/day for Zone 1/2 (which in within the city). From Heathrow T2/3 to King's Cross via the Piccadilly line will cost £5.90/trip. Kids 11 and under can travel free on busses / trams / tube with 1 accompanying adult. If you are planning to visit Lake District and getting around via bus (we will write more in another post), you can consider getting the StageCoach's daily/weekly Megarider. We took the Group Northwest Gold 7 day Megarider for our family of 2 adults + 1 child which cost £70. A single bus ride costs only £3, depends one how much you take the bus :)

Hotels we stayed in in this trip:
1. London - Premier Inn St Pancras - Best location we can find, you can book earlier with the free cancellation option. Do monitor occasionally as they change their rooms rates often. You might be able to land on a good deal with their "pay now and cancel within 28 days" option. We found that the best rooms rates is when you book about 8 months in advance, they get more expensive nearer to your travel dates. This hotel is in the middle of 3 main stations Euston, St Pancras and King's Cross. So if you are going to:
* WB Studio's Harry Potter / Lake District / Glasgow, you go to Euston
* Cambridge / York / Edinburgh, you go to King's Cross
* Paris / Europe, you go to St Pancras
All within 10 mins walk from the hotel!

2. Lake District - Premier Inn Keswick - quite a new hotel and very near Keswick bus terminal and town centre.

3. Portree - Stonefield House - Exceptionally clean rooms! The host, Kirsteen is a very nice lady, cooks the best scrambled eggs we had in the entire trip! Do book early as they only have 3 rooms in this accommodation, they sell out very very fast especially from April onward. We booked ours 8 months in advance!

4. Glasgow - we had the luxury of staying with a relative. But you can also consider Premier Inn at Buchanan Galleries. Staying in Glasgow is cheaper compared to Edinburgh. During our travel, we worked out that taking day trips to Edinburgh via ScotRail (£25.25 for 2 adults + 1 child using FnF RailCard) is cheaper than staying in Edinburgh.

Below are some items which you can purchase as soon as you have your itinerary confirmed:

1. WB Studio Harry Potter - Please book this early as they are extremely popular. We will write more in another post.

2. SIM card - You can either get a physical SIM delivered to you or consider getting an eSIM. We had the O2 100GB 30 days SIM. To be frank, the network is superb in cities but it's totally horrendous in Lake District and Isle of Skye. Based on the other reviews we read, EE should provide the most coverage, try and get them if possible. Our relative is in GiffGaff which is equally terrible as they are riding on the O2 backbone.

3. Family and Friends RailCard - this one costs £30/year. You get 30% off trains tickets. e.g. London - Glasgow, London - Cambridge, etc. We use this extensively! Condition is, you must travel with 1 child (aged between 5-15 years) and can include up to 4 adults
